In 1992 the scientific collaboration between the
Civic Museum of Natural History of Verona and the Department of Geography
of the Guizhou Normal University of Guiyang (Guizhou) was first initiated.
At the time of the first Italian expedition to China, and still today,
there were only a few researchers who were willing to face the task
of studying the chinese hypogean world. This number is even fewer when
considered in relation to the dimensions of the karst area which in
China covers a surface equivalent to 2.6 million km3, being one of the
most extensive karst areas in the world. In comparison with these enormous
dimensions the number of caves that have been explored and documented
is still quite small. It was practically impossible for many years to
visit the Popular Chinese Republic and this contributed in reinforcing
the mystery surrounding this boundless country. The opening to tourism
in relatively recent times has not gone unnoticed by the speleological
world. |
